Wellspring exists to awaken wonder, artistry, and connection through movement. We create transformative dance experiences—on stage, in class, and in community—so people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can reclaim dance as a source of expression, meaning, and belonging.

Wellspring is one of the nation’s longest-standing, small professional modern dance companies. Celebrating its 45th year in 2026, Wellspring hails from a lineage of pioneer modern dance companies. In the early years of her career, Wellspring’s founder, Cori Terry, studied and performed across the world with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company. This experience and the training she received firmly established her among an elite group of nationally acclaimed professional dancers.

This extraordinary company of poetic and athletic dancers is committed to revealing the language of modern dance to adults and children alike. Critics have called Wellspring’s work dramatic, impassioned, seamless, compelling, exuberant and life-affirming.

Each season, Wellspring presents fall and spring concerts, featuring works choreographed by Artistic Director Marisa Bianan, members of the company, and guest artists. The company also tours, and offers numerous performances, lecture/demonstrations and master classes. Nationally acclaimed performers and master teachers travel to Kalamazoo to perform and participate in Wellspring’s annual Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival (RADFest), now in its 17th year.

Adult and youth dance classes are taught throughout the year and offer area dance students one of the community’s only opportunities to study with working professional dancers. Wellspring Academy centers its programming around creating a safe, equitable, and inclusive dance space, which is enhanced by partnerships with KYDNet and the Dance Education Equity Association. Our acclaimed outreach program Ready Movers, a partnership with KC Ready4s, offers unique programs that aid with early literacy development and stress management using movement, stories, and music.

Wellspring succeeds at nurturing creative confidence in every student, from beginner to pre-professional, enhancing Kalamazoo as a vibrant hub for movement that moves hearts, bodies, and minds.
