This hour-long one-act by local playwrights Debby and Arnie Johnston dramatizes the experience of Barb Brunetti, a woman going through a five-day per week 33-day radiation protocol for breast cancer, and those of the other women she encounters during that time. Almost all of the play takes place in the small room where women wait their turn for radiation treatment. Because the breast is not a vital organ located in a difficult place to radiate, Barb’s treatment may not be as painful or as harrowing as it is for some of the other patients in the waiting room, but it’s still scary. During the 33 days covered by the play, the audience encounters both the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of these women’s lives, and sees the grace, courage, and humor with which they face cancer’s insidious challenge.
Radiation: A Month of Sun-Days,” will be the first show featured in the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre‘s revamped Carver Center Studio, 426 S. Park Street, featuring new riser seating and the first Civic performance space to be equipped with all LED lighting. The Studio Series aims to present new, innovative, and emotionally compelling works in an intimate space to foster a more thoughtful, empathetic, and connected community.
The show is presented in collaboration with the West Michigan Cancer Center & Institute for Blood Disorders, a Borgess Bronson Collaboration. The production is also sponsored by the Downtown Kalamazoo Branch of Raymond James and Associates. As a contribution to the cause of cancer treatment, research, and education, Arnie and Debby have waived their royalties for the production.
Saturday, October 7th performance will be followed by post-show creative conversation.
