    Southern Straight Singers

Observe Veterans Day with this Southwestern Michigan Native American group, whose presentations always include a moving tribute to veterans. Southern Straight Singers has been together since 2008, as a Drum group. The tribes represented are Potawatomi, Odawa, Ponca, Sioux, and Commanche. The Southern Straight Singers perform songs from the Southern Plains area. Most of the songs are very old and have been passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition. The Drum represents the heartbeat of many Indian nations across the whole United States. The Drum is also used with prayer in Ceremony and considered to be a direct connection to Mamogosnan (The Creator and Greatest of us all). It is said that while we are singing and dancing on this living earth, our Ancestors who have passed on, are doing the same in Shpemek (up above or in Heaven).

The Southern Straight Singers are Arthur Zapata-Lead Singer, Drum Keeper, Hispanic, and Comanche; Terry A. Chivis-Elder, Veteran USMC, Potawatomi and Ottawa; Sterling Bigbear Jr. Ponca; Sergio Ceron. Hispanic; and Owyn Zapata. Potawatomi. Ottawa, Hispanic and Comanche.
