ARTbreak: Harold Landes: Kalamazoo Painter with Steve Curl

Harold Landes' (1889-1992) career as a commercial artist, as a painter, and the growth of the visual arts in Kalamazoo and the story KIA are intertwined. For a 1989 retrospective, exhibition curator Helen Sheridan wrote, "Harold Landes is one of those special artists who appear occasionally in every community. They work quietly and with great commitment, but without self-aggrandizement....but seldom received the attention their work deserves." Sheridan concludes "(Landes) vitality, zest for life, and desire to make art are surprising and awesome. He has given his entire life to art, and in one way of another, his art has enriched our community and all the lives it has touched."
Presenter and artist Steve Curl gained special access to an archive of Landes material. This talk is part of an occasional series remembering some of Kalamazoo's prominent artists.

ARTbreak is a weekly program about art, artists and exhibitions.

Donations welcome. Bring your brown bag lunch, coffee provided.
