A family tradition in the making, Ballet Arts Ensemble’s fall production of The Magical Toy Shop and The Skaters will delight audiences of adults and children alike with enchantment and humor depicted in dance and mime. Featuring not only Ensemble members but also talented dancers from Western Michigan University, these works will be presented at Kalamazoo’s classic Chenery Auditorium at 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11, 2012.

The Magical Toy Shop premiered in London in 1919. Artistic Director Cathleen Huling’s original choreography, set to the Rossini score, delightfully retells the love story of two dancer dolls who live in a toy shop. As the magic of this fantasy-laced tale unfolds, the energetic dancing and classic score will keep the audience enthralled.

A ballet in one act, The Skaters debuted in London in 1937 to music of Meyerbeer. This dazzling show piece is in divertissement form rather than a story ballet. The dances simply proceed in sequence with no narrative development and depict a skating party that takes place on a winter's eve. Young people in colorful costumes dance together in various combinations—gliding and leaping and spinning across the ice—until the evening draws to a close, and a single boy is left alone, twirling like a top.

The Magical Toy Shop and The Skaters provide a fresh, family-friendly option for the local holiday entertainment calendar at an affordable price ($10 to $15 per ticket). Don’t miss this opportunity to start a new family tradition and share an afternoon of magic, fantasy, and dance. Call Miller Auditorium (387.2300) on Monday, October 1, to purchase tickets.
